Ryan Suicide, Dan Ryan, a prison convict, committed suicide by hanging
himself in what is known as the "snake den," a place for
keeping unruly prisoners in solitary confinement. It is only
used in extreme cases. Ryan was one of the most vicious and
insubordinate convicts in the pen and has spent a large portion of the
past two years in solitary confinement as a result of his ungovernable
temper an utter disregard of prison rules and discipline and even
common decency. Ryan was sent from Graham County and was under a
sentence of fife years for the crime of sodomy.

J.H. Floyed Died Aug 22 1883 | As the sheriff's posse from
Tombstone were bringing their batch of convicts to the penitentiary
last Friday night, one of the prisoners, Pete Devaux, under 10 years
sentence, jumped from the window of the train was then about 10 miles
this side of Gila Bend, and Devaux struck his head upon a stone
culvert, fracturing his skull in a number of places. The
conductor stopped the train, and when they got back to where the man
was lying he was unconscious. He was placed in the baggage car,
and brought to Yuma. He died the next day, and was buried Monday
afternoon about one o'clock.

| The High
Pardoning Power released a prisoner from the penitentiary on last
Monday. It seems that one of the inmates named Brooks was in an
excavation being made in one of the banks when a cave-in occurred
burying him in the debris. D. Baldwin was sent for at 1 P.M.,
but found the man beyond medical aid, and he was evidently injured
inwardly. A Coroner's inquest next day found the facts to be as
above, and that no blame could be attached to anyone. The weight
of the falling dirt drove Brooks astride a pick which bufied one of
its points in his body fully three inches.
